Arts Therapies Journal

The South African Journal of Arts Therapies (SAJAT), is the first and only South African academic Journal in the field of Arts Therapies. SAJAT is dedicated to fostering scholarly discussions that advance our understanding of how arts therapies contribute to the treatment, education, development, and enrichment of individuals. This innovative platform is a broad spectrum of ideas encompassing therapy, practice, professional issues, and research.

SAJAT recognise the transformative power of art therapy as a mental health profession that enhances the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Through active art-making, creative processes applied psychological theory, and the exploration of human experiences within a psychotherapeutic relationship, art therapy plays a pivotal role in promoting well-being and personal growth.

Clinical practice in arts, music, movement, or drama therapy requires registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), emphasising the importance of professional standards in delivering effective arts-based interventions. SAJAT aims to support and disseminate Africa-centred scholarship by showcasing both emerging and established voices in the field. The Journal was developed in 2023 with the University of Johannesburg Press.
